The Rio Grande Corridor — Between the Dam and the Desert
Near Truth Or Consequences, New Mexico
Truth or Consequences occupies an unusual position along the Rio Grande, tucked between Elephant Butte Lake to the north and Caballo Reservoir to the south. Both are reservoirs created by dams built in the early twentieth century to store irrigation water for the farms downstream and to generate hydroelectric power. The result is a town sitting in a corridor where the river is essentially managed on both sides.
The Rio Grande here is wide, slow, and green against the tan desert hills. The bosque, the dense woodland of cottonwood and willow trees that lines the river banks, provides habitat for migratory birds and wildlife moving through country that would otherwise be very dry. The waterfront where the hot springs emerge near the riverbank gives the place a softness that most desert towns do not have.
In recent decades Truth or Consequences has attracted a small community of artists, retirees, and people seeking a quiet life near hot water and open sky. The population is modest. The town has developed a reputation in some circles as a hidden place where the American Southwest can still be experienced without the density that has come to many better-known desert destinations.
People who find it tend to stay.
