Elizabethtown: Gateway to the Adirondack High Peaks

Near Lake Placid, New York

Elizabethtown has served as the seat of Essex County since eighteen oh seven; the county itself was carved out of Clinton County in seventeen ninety-nine. Set between the Adirondack High Peaks to the west and Lake Champlain to the east, the town was first settled around seventeen ninety-two and formally established by the state legislature in seventeen ninety-eight.

The county it anchors contains some of the highest summits in New York, including Mount Marcy, the tallest peak in the state. Essex is one of only two counties entirely within the boundaries of Adirondack Park. In the nineteenth century, Elizabethtown developed as a resort community; large hotels stood in the town center to receive summer visitors escaping the cities. The iron ore discoveries in the surrounding mountains around eighteen hundred began a parallel industrial story. The Adirondack History Museum, located here, holds the region's deepest archive of that layered past.
