Harriet Tubman's Final Resting Place, Auburn

New York

Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York, holds the grave of one of the most consequential people in American history. Harriet Tubman spent the last decades of her life in this city, having bought a small farm here in eighteen fifty-nine from the family of the abolitionist William Seward. After the Civil War, in which she served as an armed Union scout and spy, she returned to Auburn, established a home for elderly Black residents, and remained active in the women's suffrage movement into her eighties.

She died here in nineteen thirteen. The grave in Fort Hill Cemetery is a short walk from her home, now managed jointly by the National Park Service as the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park.
