Knox's Headquarters: A Georgian House and Three Generals

New York

The Ellison House in New Windsor is a solid Georgian stone home built in seventeen fifty-four by an immigrant named William Bull. Its location near the vital Hudson River crossings made it a natural command post, and over the course of the Revolutionary War three different generals used it as their headquarters: Nathanael Greene, Horatio Gates, and Henry Knox. Knox was the artillery chief who hauled fifty-nine cannon and other guns from Fort Ticonderoga across the Berkshires to Boston in the winter of seventeen seventy-five and seventeen seventy-six, forcing the British to evacuate that city. The house he used near the war's end in the early seventeen eighties still stands on Old Forge Hill Road, a National Historic Landmark, offering a quiet window into how Continental officers lived between campaigns in the Hudson Highlands.
