The Loud House: Syracuse's Dome
Near Syracuse, New York
When you see it from the highway, the dome rising above Syracuse University looks almost like something dropped from another planet onto a traditional campus of stone and brick. The stadium, now called the JMA Wireless Dome, opened on September twentieth, nineteen eighty, and it immediately claimed a title it still holds: the largest domed stadium on any college campus in the United States.
The building cost about twenty-six million dollars to construct, which was a significant investment for a university at the time. What made it special was not just the size, but the sound. Under that fabric roof, crowd noise doesn't dissipate into open sky. It bounces and amplifies until it becomes a physical force, a wall of sound that visiting teams have to shout over just to call a play. Syracuse fans came to call it simply the Loud House, and opposing quarterbacks who have stood at the line of scrimmage inside it understand why.
The dome holds about forty-three thousand fans for football after its recent renovation. For basketball, it configures down to roughly thirty-five thousand, making it the largest on-campus basketball arena in the country. The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament has used it seven times for late-round games, and the sight of those bracket games played in a football stadium has become part of March Madness lore.
The naming rights have changed twice. It was called the Carrier Dome from opening day until twenty twenty-two, when JMA Wireless purchased the name for ten years. But to most people who have spent winters in Syracuse, it will always be just the Dome, a place where the Orange play, the roof shudders with noise, and the gray winter outside disappears entirely into something loud and orange and alive.
