Walter's: The Pagoda Hot Dog Stand

New York

At the corner of Palmer Avenue in Mamaroneck stands a small roadside stand with a copper-roofed pagoda top, built in nineteen twenty-eight and still selling hot dogs from the same location. Walter Warrington opened the original stand in nineteen nineteen to sell the split-and-grilled frankfurters he had perfected, served in a toasted bun with mustard and a secret relish. He built the current pagoda structure in nineteen twenty-eight to make the stand impossible to miss from the road.

It worked. Walter's is on the National Register of Historic Places, one of very few hot dog stands so honored, recognized not for architectural grandeur but for the almost century-long continuity of a single family, a single product, and a single method. The line on summer weekends can stretch around the block.

The recipe has not changed.
