Whitney Point, Where Two Rivers Meet
New York
Whitney Point sits at the confluence of the Tioughnioga and Otselic Rivers in northern Broome County. The first settler, General John Paterson, arrived from Massachusetts in seventeen ninety-one and called the place Paterson's Corners. In eighteen oh two, brothers Thomas and William Whitney settled here and became the community's anchors.
When the first post office opened in eighteen twenty-four, Thomas Whitney became postmaster, and the settlement took on his family name. The village incorporated in eighteen seventy-one. Three years later it became home to the Broome County Fair, which has run continuously since eighteen seventy-four, making it one of the oldest county fairs in upstate New York.
