Ayr Mount: A Scottish Immigrant's Federal Masterpiece
Near Raleigh Durham, North Carolina
Just outside historic Hillsborough, North Carolina, stands Ayr Mount, a Federal-style plantation house built in eighteen fifteen by William Kirkland, a Scottish immigrant who had arrived in the Piedmont in seventeen eighty-nine. Kirkland named the house for Ayr, his birthplace in Scotland. It is considered one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in the Piedmont, one of the first homes built of brick in the region and the prototype for many similar houses built in North Carolina over the following decades.
The exterior is deliberately austere, as Federal style demands, but the interior reveals fourteen-foot ceilings, elaborate plasterwork, and finely detailed woodwork. The property is now owned by the Classical American Homes Preservation Trust, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and open for tours.
