Beirut Memorial: Two Hundred Forty-One

North Carolina

Outside the gate of Camp Johnson, part of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, in Jacksonville stands the Beirut Memorial, honoring two hundred forty-one United States service members killed on October twenty-third, nineteen eighty-three, when a suicide truck bomber drove into their barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. Most of the dead were Marines from the First Battalion of the Eighth Marines, based at Lejeune. It remains the deadliest single-day loss for the Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Two broken white granite walls bracket a pedestal that later received a bronze statue. Every name is inscribed. The memorial was dedicated on October twenty-third, nineteen eighty-six.
