Biltmore Forest

North Carolina

Biltmore Forest is a small, quiet town carved out of the edge of George Vanderbilt's estate. After the nineteen sixteen flood damaged parts of the Biltmore property, estate trustees asked attorney Junius Adams to review the land holdings and find a way to reduce costs. His recommendation: sell a portion as a planned residential community of the highest quality.

The town incorporated in nineteen twenty-three and was designed as a residential park, with winding roads and strict covenants to match the grandeur of the estate next door. It sits tucked between Biltmore Estate, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the city of Asheville, with fewer than fifteen hundred residents today. Its incorporation was partly practical and partly a way to preserve the character of the land Vanderbilt had spent decades cultivating.

It remains one of the wealthiest small towns in North Carolina.
