Camp Glenn: Guard Camp to Coast Guard Air Station

North Carolina

Three miles west of Morehead City, the state of North Carolina established Camp Glenn in nineteen oh six, naming it for then-governor Robert Glenn. For more than a decade it served as the annual training ground for the North Carolina National Guard. When the United States entered World War One, the federal government took over the site and expanded it into a Navy air facility.

Then in nineteen twenty, the site was transferred to the Coast Guard and became the first United States Coast Guard air station in history. For about a year, Coast Guard aviators flew from here on an experimental basis, locating vessels in distress and watching for rumrunners along the Carolina coast. The program was not continued, and the station closed in nineteen twenty-one.

A brief experiment that proved an enduring concept.
