Camp Greene: Charlotte's World War One Training Ground

Near Charlotte, North Carolina

From July nineteen seventeen through June nineteen nineteen, a massive military training installation called Camp Greene occupied land on the western edge of Charlotte. Named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene, the camp trained tens of thousands of American soldiers for service on the Western Front. At its peak, Camp Greene held roughly forty thousand men, transforming quiet farmland into a temporary city of barracks, hospitals, and training ranges.

The camp brought an economic surge to Charlotte and introduced soldiers from across the country to the Carolina Piedmont. After the armistice, the camp was dismantled and the land returned to civilian use, eventually becoming the residential and commercial neighborhoods that surround this marker. The Daughters of the American Revolution erected this memorial in recognition of both the camp's scale and the service of the men who passed through it.
