Carson House: McDowell County's First Courthouse

North Carolina

The Carson House served as the seat of McDowell County government from eighteen forty-three to eighteen forty-five, a brief but consequential chapter for this part of western North Carolina. It was home to Colonel John Carson and his sons, Jonathan, Samuel, William, and Joseph, a family woven into the political fabric of the early mountain counties. The house survived when so much of that era did not, and today it operates as a historical museum. Walking through it means stepping into the domestic world of a frontier county government, before courthouses were permanent and before mountain politics had hardened into routine.
