Confederate Cemetery at Bentonville
North Carolina
Beneath this ground lie the remains of three hundred sixty Confederate soldiers who fell during the Battle of Bentonville in March of eighteen sixty-five, the largest Civil War engagement fought on North Carolina soil. The men were originally buried across the battlefield where they fell. In eighteen ninety-three, veterans and local residents gathered their remains and reinterred them here in a single cemetery plot, marking the spot with a monument that still stands today.
Bentonville was General Joseph Johnston's last serious attempt to stop Sherman's march through the Carolinas. Though the Confederates held their ground for a day, Union reinforcements arrived and they withdrew. Johnston surrendered about five weeks later.
This quiet cemetery is one of the most visited Civil War sites in North Carolina.
