Henry River Mill Village

North Carolina

Henry River Mill Village in Burke County, North Carolina, is a near-complete company town that ran a cotton mill from nineteen oh five until nineteen seventy-one. The owner built worker housing, a company store, and a church alongside the mill on the Henry River, and for six decades nearly every resident was both an employee and a tenant. When the mill closed, the village fell into slow decay, its frame houses standing largely untouched, though the brick mill itself burned in nineteen seventy-seven.

It gained an unlikely second life when the production of The Hunger Games filmed here, using the derelict village as the visual template for District Twelve. The fame brought attention but also complication: the property has changed hands, and the future of the buildings remains uncertain. It is one of the most intact surviving examples of Piedmont mill culture in the South.
