Hope Mills Dam
Near Fayetteville, North Carolina
Hope Mills Dam dates to eighteen thirty-nine, when entrepreneurs harnessed Rockfish Creek to power one of the earliest cotton mills in the Cape Fear interior. The mill village that grew around it was called Manchester, then renamed Hope Mills for the aspiration the enterprise represented. Dozens of mill families lived in company-owned cottages beside the pond.
The mill complex burned and was rebuilt multiple times through the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. A dam on the site, rebuilt several times since, remains a centerpiece of Hope Mills Lake today, and the surrounding town of roughly eighteen thousand is one of the fastest-growing communities in Cumberland County, tucked just southwest of Fayetteville.
