Hoyle Historic Homestead: Oldest House in Gaston County
North Carolina
The Hoyle Historic Homestead in Gaston County is one of the oldest surviving houses in the North Carolina Piedmont. The Heyl family, the name was later Anglicized to Hoyle, emigrated from Frederick, Maryland, and by seventeen fifty-three had settled on what was then Anson County land. The family later received North Carolina land grants in the area, including one in seventeen sixty-five.
The house itself was likely built in the mid-eighteenth century, with a major renovation around eighteen ten that added late Georgian and Federal finishes. A later descendant, Andrew Hoyle, known as Rich Andrew, was a prosperous farmer and entrepreneur who received the property in seventeen ninety-four. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety-three. Today it is preserved by a local historical organization as a site interpreting German-American frontier settlement in the Carolina Piedmont.
