Lewis Freeman: Free Black Founder of Pittsboro

North Carolina

In Pittsboro, the Chatham County seat of North Carolina, a modest one-story cottage on West Salisbury Street stands as a rare surviving testament to a remarkable life. Lewis Freeman was born a free Black man in the late seventeen hundreds and became the most prosperous free Black property owner in Pittsboro's early history. He acquired multiple parcels within the town itself, plus additional land in Chatham County, a degree of landownership that was extraordinary for a free Black person in antebellum North Carolina.

The original structure was built between approximately eighteen eleven and eighteen thirty-seven and expanded through the eighteen nineties. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen eighty-two, the Lewis Freeman House is one of only four dwellings surviving from Pittsboro's original settlement, and the one that carries the most unexpected story.
