Linville Gorge: The Grand Canyon the Guidebooks Underestimate

Near Banner Elk, North Carolina

From the rim you can see the Linville River a thousand feet below, threading through a gorge that the rock walls squeeze to perhaps two hundred feet wide in places. The stone on either side is the oldest exposed basement rock in the eastern United States, a billion years old, Precambrian granite and gneiss pushed up through later sedimentary layers by tectonic forces that geologists are still working to fully explain.

Linville Gorge Wilderness, inside Pisgah National Forest, is one of the oldest designated wilderness areas in the eastern United States. Congress designated it under the Wilderness Act of nineteen sixty-four. The designation protects roughly eleven thousand acres, including twelve miles of river canyon walls that drop in some places more than fifteen hundred feet from rim to water. There are trails into the gorge, but none of them is gentle. The terrain is technical enough that wilderness permits are required on summer weekends, not because traffic is high but because rescues are.

The gorge was carved over millions of years by the Linville River cutting downward through that ancient basement rock while the surrounding plateau remained relatively stable. The result is a canyon disproportionately deep for the modest size of the river at its bottom. Visitors expecting the scale of western gorges are sometimes surprised by how enclosed and vertical the walls feel. The trail from Wiseman's View, on the eastern rim, provides the most accessible overview. From there, on a clear day, you can see the full arc of the gorge and Grandfather Mountain rising to the northeast.

The Linville Falls, at the gorge's upper entrance, plunges in two stages over resistant quartzite ledges. The upper falls drops twenty feet; the lower falls drop forty-five feet into a plunge pool that has been photographed by every serious landscape photographer in the eastern United States. It is one of the most visited spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
