Mars Hill University

North Carolina

Perched at the northern edge of Madison County, Mars Hill University is one of the oldest colleges in western North Carolina. It was founded in eighteen fifty-six by a Baptist missionary association, established specifically to serve the mountain communities that had almost no access to formal schooling. The college began in a single log building with a handful of students and a two-person faculty.

Over time it grew into a full liberal arts institution, and today enrolls roughly one thousand students. Its campus features a clutch of Colonial Revival buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mars Hill also houses the Rural Heritage Museum, preserving Appalachian craft, furniture, and tools donated by mountain families, making the college a living archive of the region it was built to serve.
