New Bern: Swiss Founders, Tuscarora War, and a Colonial Palace

North Carolina

New Bern was founded in seventeen ten by a Swiss nobleman named Christoph von Graffenried and the English explorer John Lawson, who recruited a group of Swiss and German immigrants to settle at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers. The name honored Bern, Switzerland. What followed almost immediately was catastrophe.

Lawson and a companion were captured and killed by Tuscarora warriors in seventeen eleven, and the Tuscarora War swept through the new settlement with devastating force. The Tuscarora had strong reasons for fury: European encroachment, disease, and the English practice of enslaving Indigenous people had destabilized their world. New Bern and the neighboring town of Bath were attacked and devastated. An expedition from South Carolina finally crushed the resistance in seventeen thirteen with a horrific assault on the Tuscarora town of Fort Neoheroka, killing hundreds, with hundreds more sold into slavery. The war broke the Tuscarora Nation's power in the Carolinas forever.

New Bern rebuilt and rose. By seventeen sixty-six it had become the colonial capital of North Carolina. The royal governor William Tryon then committed the defining act of colonial ambition in the region: he commissioned architect John Hawks to design a governor's palace, completed in seventeen seventy. Historian William Powell called it the finest government house in the colonies. It was also wildly expensive. The tax burden it imposed sparked the Regulator Revolt, a backcountry uprising that foreshadowed the Revolution. Tryon put it down violently at the Battle of Alamance in seventeen seventy-one.

Tryon Palace burned in seventeen ninety-eight but was meticulously reconstructed beginning in the nineteen fifties. The replica stands today as one of the most accurate colonial restorations in America , a monument to the ambitions, violences, and costs that built this coast.
