Rehoboth Church: Three Centuries of Worship in Washington County
North Carolina
The congregation at this site traces its roots to the colonial era. An earlier Anglican congregation is said to have worshipped in this area. A successor congregation built the present Rehoboth Church between eighteen fifty and eighteen fifty-three with construction possibly carried out by enslaved workers.
The building is a spare Greek Revival timber-frame structure with two front doors, a tradition said to have separated male and female worshippers, and a balcony said to have been reserved for Black congregants. The church affiliated with Methodism and remains in use today. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen seventy-six and is a well-preserved antebellum rural church.
