The First Post Road
North Carolina
The colonial post road that passed near this spot was an early route over which mail was carried through North Carolina, part of an effort to tie the colonies together. In seventeen thirty-nine, a postal route was planned to run from Boston all the way to Charleston, South Carolina, through Edenton and down the coastal plain. The road itself was rough, often impassable in wet weather, and the effort proved short lived. But for a brief moment, this corner of the Albemarle region was a link in the chain that tied the British colonies together before they became a nation.
