The Wilmington Morning Star
Near Wilmington, North Carolina
The oldest daily newspaper in continuous publication in North Carolina was born in downtown Wilmington in eighteen sixty-seven. William Henry Bernard, a Confederate veteran, launched it as the Wilmington Evening Star. He soon switched to morning publication, rechristening it the Wilmington Morning Star.
The paper survived Reconstruction, two world wars, and more than a century and a half of coastal storms and civic upheaval. It is regarded as the state's oldest continuously published newspaper. It remains in print today as the StarNews, a living thread connecting modern Wilmington to the turbulent years that followed the Civil War.
