The Wyndham: One of Golf's Oldest Surviving Tournaments

Near Greensboro, North Carolina

The Greater Greensboro Open launched in nineteen thirty-eight, which makes it the seventh-oldest event on the PGA Tour still being played today. Sam Snead won the inaugural tournament and returned to win it seven more times, including a victory in nineteen sixty-five that made him the oldest player ever to win on the PGA Tour.

The tournament has been played in Greensboro for its entire history, moving among Starmount Forest Country Club, Forest Oaks, and Sedgefield Country Club, which was designed by the legendary Donald Ross. Eighteen past winners are members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, among them Byron Nelson, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, and Seve Ballesteros. It became the Wyndham Championship in two thousand seven when Wyndham Hotels took over the title sponsorship. Today it serves as the final regular-season event before the FedEx Cup Playoffs, giving it an outsized role for players scrambling to lock in their postseason spots.
