Town Creek Indian Mound

North Carolina

About two miles from where you are sits one of the most significant Native American archaeological sites in the Carolinas. Town Creek Indian Mound was the civic and ceremonial center of a Mississippian culture community dating to around eleven fifty C.E.

The people who built it raised a flat-topped earthen platform mound at the heart of a palisaded village, using it for rituals, leadership, and community life for roughly two and a half centuries. Archaeologists have worked this site since nineteen thirty-seven, making it one of the longest-running excavations in the Southeast. North Carolina opened it as a State Historic Site, and it remains a rare place where you can stand at the base of a mound that was already ancient when European contact reshaped this continent.
