Assumption Abbey: Benedictines on the High Plains
Near Dickinson, North Dakota
Assumption Abbey, in Richardton, North Dakota, was settled in eighteen ninety-nine and made an abbey in nineteen oh three by Benedictine monks led by Vincent Wehrle of Switzerland, who came west specifically to serve the German-Russian Catholic immigrant communities flooding into Stark County. The monks established a priory, a seminary, and eventually a full abbey that for decades anchored the Catholic intellectual and institutional life of the region. Assumption College, the abbey's affiliated school, educated generations of the area's German-Russian families before closing.
The monastery still operates today, home to a small community of monks following the Rule of Saint Benedict, producing fruitcake and a jam operation that ships nationally. It is an unlikely survival, a medieval monastic tradition rooted in the same prairie that drew cattle ranchers and homesteaders.
