Norsk Hostfest: The Largest Scandinavian Festival in North America
Near Minot, North Dakota
For nearly half a century, Minot hosted what was billed as the largest Scandinavian festival in North America: Norsk Hostfest, which translates roughly as Norwegian Harvest Festival. The event began in nineteen seventy-eight, founded by a group of local Norwegian-Americans who wanted to celebrate the heritage that had shaped the region. It was held at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds and drew tens of thousands of visitors.
The festival featured traditional crafts, rosemaling folk painting, lefse, lutefisk, and musical acts drawn from both Scandinavia and the broader Norwegian-American community. The Scandinavian American Hall of Fame, which recognizes individuals of Scandinavian heritage who have distinguished themselves in American life, is housed in Minot and tied directly to the Hostfest tradition. In a part of the country that rarely makes national lists, Norsk Hostfest was a genuine point of continental distinction.
