Williston Country: Oil, Rivers, and the Long Arc

North Dakota

Williston sits at the intersection of three defining forces in the upper Missouri country: the river trade that made this corner of the continent matter to the fur economy; the railroads that opened it to homesteaders; and the oil beneath the Bakken shale that turned a quiet plains town into one of the fastest-growing cities in America for a few extraordinary years in the early two thousands and teens. The Missouri and Yellowstone rivers shaped where people settled here. The Great Northern put down tracks.

The Bakken shale did the rest. These hills have seen trading empires, military surrenders, reservoir floods, and oil booms. All of it is still visible if you know where to look.
