Auglaize County Courthouse
Ohio
Wapakoneta, Ohio, is a small city in the flatlands of Auglaize County, and it has one defining fact about itself that it will never let you forget: Neil Armstrong was born here, on August fifth, nineteen thirty. The county courthouse, built in eighteen ninety-four and still in use, became the backdrop for one of the most jubilant parades in the city's history when Armstrong came home after the moon landing in September of nineteen sixty-nine. People climbed onto its roof ledge to see him pass.
The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In nineteen ninety-four, to mark the building's centennial, a restored Lady Justice statue, rebuilt from the few pieces saved from the original, was placed in the great hall on the main floor, presiding over a county that never stopped being proud of the first human to walk on another world.
