Austintown, Ohio: Named for the Land Agent
Near Youngstown, Ohio
Austintown Township in Mahoning County dates to seventeen ninety-three, when it was surveyed as Township Two, Range Three of the Connecticut Western Reserve, the vast tract that Connecticut claimed in northeastern Ohio under its colonial charter. The township was named for Calvin Austin, a judge from Warren who served as land agent for the Connecticut Land Company, distributing plots to arriving settlers. The first settler, John McCollum, reached Austintown in seventeen ninety-four.
The community remained agricultural for most of its history, then grew rapidly after World War Two as Youngstown's steel industry expanded outward. Today Austintown is a suburban township of about thirty thousand people, one of the more populous unincorporated communities in Ohio.
