Butterworth Station: Underground Railroad's Southern Edge
Ohio
Built in eighteen twenty, the Butterworth Station farmstead served for decades as the southernmost stop on the Underground Railroad in Warren County, Ohio. The Butterworth family used their home to shelter freedom seekers making the dangerous journey north from Kentucky across the Ohio River, passing them on through the network of safe houses that stretched toward Lake Erie and Canada.
The family's contributions went beyond their role as conductors. They aided railroad development in the region, founded the Maineville Academy to provide local education, and produced civic leaders who shaped Warren County for generations. They later donated land to the community, a gift that outlasted the individuals but preserved the family name on the landscape. The station marker placed here in two thousand fifteen honors a family that operated quietly and at great personal risk during one of the most consequential moral struggles in American history.
