Coshocton County Courthouse: The Canal Town's Crown

Ohio

The Coshocton County Courthouse, built between eighteen seventy-three and eighteen seventy-five, stands as a Second Empire brick landmark with a five-story clock tower in the center of a county seat that grew fat on the Ohio and Erie Canal era. The second courthouse on this site, it replaced an eighteen twenty-four predecessor that the growing county had outgrown. The Meadville, Pennsylvania firm of Carpenter and Williams designed it, at a final cost of about one hundred thousand dollars.

Inside, a mural by artist Arthur William Woelfle depicts Colonel Henry Bouquet's treaty with the Delaware and Shawnee along the Walhonding River in seventeen sixty-four, a reminder that this canal town stands on contested frontier ground. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen seventy-three.
