Enon: Springs of the Bible Belt

Near Dayton, Ohio

The village of Enon in Clark County, Ohio, takes its name from the Hebrew word for abundance of springs. The same Enon appears in the Gospel of John as the place where John the Baptist baptized great crowds because, the scripture says, there was much water there. The Ohio settlement was platted in eighteen thirty-eight. The biblical name gave the village an air of spiritual purpose that fit the heavily Protestant character of the early Ohio frontier.
