Fort Winchester: Harrison's War of 1812 Supply Base

Ohio

In October of eighteen twelve, General William Henry Harrison, the same man who would become the ninth president of the United States, ordered a fort built here at the confluence of the Auglaize and Maumee rivers. Fort Winchester served as a critical supply depot and staging area during the War of eighteen twelve, gathering men and materials before operations pushed north toward the Michigan Territory and Fort Meigs on the Maumee River. Soldiers trained here, provisions were stockpiled, and the garrison held the strategic river junction that controlled movement through the northwest.

The fort was abandoned by eighteen fifteen when the war ended, but its presence was not without legacy. Sidewalk plaques in modern Defiance, Ohio, still mark the full extent of the old fort.
