Grove City, Ohio

Near Columbus, Ohio

Grove City's story begins with William F. Breck, who in eighteen fifty-two bought about fifteen acres from a farm family named Grant and then assembled a commission to plat a village. The founders left stands of oak, beech, maple, and walnut in place while clearing the land, and those remaining groves gave the village its name.

By December eighteen fifty-three, fifty people had settled the not-yet-official village. Thirty-seven of them petitioned Franklin County commissioners for formal status, and Grove City incorporated as a village on March fifth, eighteen sixty-six. The Grant family's ancestor Hugh Grant had bought this land in eighteen oh three and settled on it, which means someone was living on this southwest Columbus ground for decades before anyone thought to build a town around it.
