Kirkersville: A Governor's Family Land
Ohio
The little village of Kirkersville, Ohio, traces its roots to one of the state's most prominent early families. Thomas Kirker, who had served as governor of Ohio in eighteen oh seven and eighteen oh eight, is said to have had family land here along the South Fork of the Licking River. William Kirker platted the town in eighteen thirty-two, and the settlement took the family name.
Today it counts fewer than five hundred residents. The Kirker family story is threaded through Licking County's early years, a reminder that Ohio's frontier villages were often planted not by anonymous settlers but by the connected families who shaped the young state.
