Ludlow Station: St. Clair and Mad Anthony Wayne
Ohio
Near this Cincinnati-area site stood Ludlow Station, a frontier blockhouse built in seventeen ninety-one during the United States Army's desperate campaigns to control the Northwest Territory. General Arthur St. Clair is said to have encamped here in seventeen ninety-one before leading his force north to one of the worst American military defeats in history: St.
Clair's Defeat, in which Native confederacy warriors killed or wounded roughly nine hundred to a thousand soldiers. Two years later, the legendary General Anthony Wayne, known as Mad Anthony for his audacious tactics, is said to have encamped here in seventeen ninety-three while organizing the army that would eventually win the Battle of Fallen Timbers and open Ohio for settlement. Two pivotal chapters of the Northwest Indian War passed through this quiet bend in the river.
