MAPS Air Museum: Warbirds at Akron-Canton Airport
Near Akron, Ohio
At Akron-Canton Airport sits the Military Aviation Preservation Society museum, known as MAPS, one of the more serious warbird collections in the Midwest. The museum traces to nineteen ninety, when collector David Tallichet and his Military Aircraft Restoration Corporation began assembling aircraft. It opened to the public in nineteen ninety-five.
The collection now spans more than fifty aircraft, ranging from a replica of a nineteen oh eight Martin Glider, said to be the first heavier-than-air craft to carry a woman aloft, to a Korean War-era F-eighty-six Sabre to an F-fourteen Tomcat. More than one hundred thirty exhibits cover aviation history from World War One through the jet age. The museum is run entirely by volunteers, a fact that makes its depth and breadth more impressive.
If you find yourself near Canton with an afternoon free, it rewards the detour.
