Marengo, Ohio

Ohio

The Morrow County village of Marengo owes its name to a woman's admiration for Napoleon Bonaparte. The site was first settled in eighteen forty-three when Isaac Freeman built a cabin at what became known as Freeman's Corners. A few years later, when a post office was needed in the eighteen forties, Isaac's wife chose the name herself.

She was an admirer of Napoleon and named the community after the Battle of Marengo, the stunning eighteen hundred victory in northern Italy where Napoleon turned near-defeat into a decisive triumph over Austria. The post office took the name, the village took the post office's name, and it stuck. The village itself was not formally platted until eighteen seventy-three.

Marengo sits in the western part of Morrow County, a county named for Jeremiah Morrow, an Ohio governor who served in the eighteen twenties.
