Maumee, Ohio

Near Toledo, Ohio

Maumee sits on ground that has seen more than two centuries of military history. In seventeen ninety-four, the British built Fort Miamis right here on the riverbank to block General Anthony Wayne's army from advancing toward Detroit. Less than ten miles away, Wayne's forces won the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August twentieth of that year, routing a confederation of Native warriors who then retreated to the British fort, only to find its gates closed against them.

That betrayal broke the Northwest Indian War. The Americans formally founded the city of Maumee in eighteen seventeen. By eighteen forty it had become the county seat, though Toledo eventually took that title away.

The Battle of Fallen Timbers site is now a National Historic Site just west of town.
