Morristown, Ohio

Ohio

Morristown is one of the oldest communities in Belmont County, platted in eighteen oh two, which makes it older than Ohio statehood, which was not official until March of eighteen oh three. The village was laid out along the old Wheeling Road and named for Duncan Morrison, a pioneer settler. The National Road came through in the eighteen twenties, cementing Morristown's role as a stopping point for travelers heading west.

The village was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen eighty because so much of its early architecture survived. Federal and Greek Revival homes still line the main street, showing what a National Road town looked like when wagon traffic was the measure of a community's prosperity.
