Newtown, Ohio

Ohio

Newtown is one of the oldest European settlements in Hamilton County, staked out in seventeen ninety-two when Captain Aaron Mercer put up a blockhouse at the edge of the Ohio frontier and called the place Mercersburg.

Settlers who cleared the land found the ground already full of history: earthwork mounds and village sites left by Hopewell peoples who had lived here for a thousand years before them. The Odd Fellows Cemetery Mound still stands inside the village today.

Mercersburg eventually became Newtown, incorporated as a village in nineteen oh one, and gradually absorbed into the suburban ring east of Cincinnati. Its frontier blockhouse is long gone, but the mounds beneath the neighborhood predate every name this place has ever carried.
