Saint Luke's Episcopal Church: Ohio Frontier Faith
Ohio
Local tradition holds that the Book of Common Prayer was used here in the earliest days of the Northwest Territory, when Ohio was still a wilderness of scattered settlements. Formal parish life came later, and the congregation went on to build a church of its own.
The present church still serves the congregation. Saint Luke's story tracks the arc of an American frontier town finding its institutional footing, from informal prayer gatherings in a raw settlement to a parish with a permanent church. The congregation has continued in some form ever since.
