Tallmadge, Ohio
Near Akron, Ohio
Tallmadge was among the most deliberately planned towns in the early American West. Connecticut Congregationalists founded it in eighteen oh seven, designing the town around a classic New England green, with the church at the center and streets radiating outward like spokes on a wheel. The founder, Reverend David Bacon, had specific religious and civic intentions: Tallmadge was to be an ordered, godly community from the first survey stake.
The street pattern endured. Tallmadge Circle, the original village green with its radial avenues, remains at the center of town today, a lasting example of a New England style planned town in Ohio.
