Tipp City, Ohio
Near Dayton, Ohio
Tipp City, Ohio, was founded in eighteen forty as Tippecanoe City, its name riding the wave of a presidential campaign. The founding coincided exactly with William Henry Harrison's run for the White House under the famous slogan Tippecanoe and Tyler Too, a reference to Harrison's victory at the Battle of Tippecanoe in eighteen eleven. The town grew quickly along the Miami and Erie Canal, becoming a popular rest stop for boatmen hauling goods through the Ohio interior.
When railroads arrived in the eighteen fifties they put the canal out of business, slowing the city's growth considerably. The name changed in nineteen thirty-eight, when the U.S.
Postal Service shortened Tippecanoe City to Tipp City to end a long-running confusion with another Tippecanoe in Ohio. Today the old downtown is notable for its well-preserved Victorian commercial district.
