L. L. Stine House: Woodward's Land-Run Banker

Oklahoma

The three-story Classical Revival mansion on the north side of Woodward is the most formal building in a town born of a land run.

L. L. Stine was among the five thousand or so settlers who claimed land in the Cherokee Outlet run of eighteen ninety-three. He built his fortune as a prominent Woodward banker. Around nineteen sixteen he commissioned Wichita architect U. G. Charles to design a home appropriate to his standing. The result is the only large Classical Revival building in Woodward, its brick walls and columned facade imported from a different world than the surrounding plains.

The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen eighty-three. Today the Great Plains Preservation and Development Foundation owns it and uses it as a community event venue.
