Sherwin Miller Museum: Largest Jewish Art Collection in the Southwest

Near Tulsa, Oklahoma

The Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art in Tulsa holds the largest collection of Jewish art in the Southwestern United States, more than sixteen thousand pieces, which is a remarkable fact for a landlocked Oklahoma city. It started in nineteen sixty-five when a local synagogue brought a traveling exhibit called Traditional Ceremonial Art from the Jewish Museum in New York. The public response was large enough that the museum was formally founded in nineteen sixty-six as the Gershon and Rebecca Fenster Museum of Jewish Art.

It was housed at Congregation B'nai Emunah Synagogue for more than three decades. In two thousand the museum was renamed in honor of Sherwin Miller, and a few years later it moved to the Zarrow Campus of the Jewish Federation of Tulsa. It received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums in two thousand thirteen.
