Brighton, Oregon: The Resort That Never Was
Near Cannon Beach, Oregon
Just south of the Nehalem Bay, you're passing the site of Brighton, an Oregon coast town that was platted in nineteen ten with grand ambitions. Developers named it after the famous English seaside resort and hoped it would become a fashionable vacation destination for Pacific Northwest travelers. The Southern Pacific Railroad even gave the station here the name Brighton Beach.
A post office opened in nineteen twelve, lending the town an air of permanence. But the visitors never quite came in the numbers dreamers had imagined. The community limped along for decades, small and quiet, until the post office closed for good in nineteen fifty-seven, taking the last official marker of the town with it.
Brighton today survives as little more than a name on old maps, one of dozens of Oregon coastal dreams that the fog and the market quietly swallowed.
