Hatfield Marine Science Center

Oregon

On the south shore of Yaquina Bay, the Hatfield Marine Science Center opened in nineteen sixty-five as a joint facility for Oregon State University and federal fisheries researchers. Federal redevelopment money helped build it at a moment when American ocean science was expanding rapidly after Sputnik spurred investment in all fields of research. Early work here ranged from oyster culture and pesticide impacts on estuaries to rocky-shore ecology.

NOAA later added its own facilities to the campus, making Yaquina Bay one of the few places in the country where a land-grant university and a federal agency share a waterfront lab side by side. The complex was later renamed for Oregon Governor and Senator Mark Hatfield, who had championed coastal research funding for decades. The visitor center remains open to the public, offering aquarium exhibits and a window into ongoing Pacific Ocean science.
